In the 1980s, four pioneering states enacted laws requiring health insurance to cover education and training for diabetics. By 1996, 10 states had laws that covered diabetic services and equipment. Between 1997 and 1998, an additional 23 states enacted similar laws. At least 14 other states considered bills in 1998. Some health plans cover diabetes without a state mandate.

Many patients can manage their diabetes at home under the supervision of a physician. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, effective diabetes management can help you avoid costly and devastating complications such as blindness, amputations, heart disease, strokes, and renal disease. Although self management treatments are not always covered by insurance, a growing number of states now mandate coverage of diabetes pharmaceuticals, equipment, supplies, and education services.
